EIA ( Environmental impact assessment ) is used to assess environmental effects, compare alternatives, identify appropriate mitigation measures and facilitate informed decision making. An EIA must comply with the prevailing legislation and/or guidelines and will typically include the following:
- Detailed project description, noting the sources and impacts of environmental disturbances
- Complete list of alternatives, including those rejected and detailed examination of those under serious consideration
- Description of the project environment, including the fauna, flora, air, soil, water, socio-economics and cultural heritage
- Detailed examination of the nature and scope of potential impacts, temporary and permanent, local and regional
- Proposal of mitigation measures based on potential impacts
- Description of any assumptions and limitations of the EIA or unknown factors
- Non-technical summary of the project and the findings of the EIA written for non-experts and decision makers.
